기물의 지혜 
HANJI OBJECTS: EMBRACING WISDOM

한지는 선조들의 일상 속 특별한 의미를 지닌 존재였다. 내구성, 보존성, 통기성, 방습성 등이 탁월한 한지는 예로부터 서책으로 활용되며 이 땅의 삶을 후대에 전했다. 기록의 소임을 마치면 기물의 제작에 활용되기도 하였는데, 한지로 만든 기물은 가볍고도 견고하며 습기에 강해 그야말로 세간의 역할을 톡톡히 했다. 한지 위에 글을 쓰고, 한지로 만든 물건을 사용하며 생활풍정을 지혜롭게 매만져온 극동의 반도. 이 전시는 괴산과 원주의 한지 기물 소장품을 통하여 오랜 풍상을 간직한 기물에 서려 있는 선조들의 슬기를 살펴보고자 한다.

전시는 강원도 원주의 사단법인 한지문화재단, 충북 괴산한지박물관이 소장한 서책과 기물을 소개한다. 원주의 서책들은 지승공예 대가 故 문연희 작가 유족의 기증품으로, 제작 방식에 따라 사본과 간인본으로 나뉘며 전사본, 사경, 족보 등 다양한 유형이 포함되어 있다. 대다수는 목판이나 금속활자로 인쇄된 간인본이며 일부는 손으로 필사한 사본으로 추정된다. 괴산의 기물들은 신풍한지의 안치용 장인이 수십 년간 모은 함과 합, 반, 우산, 부채 등이다. 모두 저자와 연대는 알려져 있지 않으나, 한반도의 이름 없는 손길과 기록되지 않은 흔적이 서려, 이 기물들은 그야말로 미래로 이어질 생활문화의 지혜를 상상하도록 권하는 것이다.


Hanji(Korean traditional paper) held a special significance in the daily lives of our ancestors. Prized for its exceptional durability, preservation qualities, breathability, and moisture resistance, Hanji was traditionally used for books, thereby transmitting Korean narratives to succeeding generations. Once its role in recording was fulfilled, it was often repurposed for crafting everyday objects. Articles made from Hanji were light yet robust and resistant to humidity, serving their household purposes with remarkable efficacy. On this peninsula in the Far East, people inscribed their thoughts on Hanji and utilized objects fashioned from it, wisely shaping their lived experiences. This exhibition introduces a collection of Hanji artifacts from the Goesan and Wonju regions, seeking to explore the ancestral wisdom imbued in these objects weathered by the passage of time.

This exhibition showcases books and artifacts from the collections of the Hanji Art&Culture Foundation in Wonju, and the Goesan Hanji Experience Museum. The books from Wonju, donated by the family of the late Master Moon Yeon-hee, a virtuoso of jiseung (paper cord) craft, are categorized by their production methods into handwritten manuscripts and printed editions. They encompass diverse types, including transcribed books, sutra transcriptions, and genealogical records. The majority are printed editions, produced using woodblocks or metal type, while some are presumed to be handwritten manuscripts. The artifacts from Goesan—comprising boxs, containers, trays, umbrellas, and fans—were amassed over several decades by Master Ahn Chi-yong of Sinpung Hanji. Though the creators and exact dates of these items remain unknown, they are imbued with the anonymous touch and unrecorded traces of the Korean peninsula. These objects eloquently invite us to envision the wisdom of a material culture destined to be passed down to the future.
